6 Tips to Make a Great First Impression on Any Occasion

We would all prefer to be judged by our skills and knowledge and not by what we appear to be. But it takes just a few seconds for someone to evaluate you when you meet for the first time. This is why making a good first impression is extremely important because you only get one shot at it.

We at LikeAble believe that your appearance can have a serious effect on your ability to achieve success, so here are 6 tips you should always keep in mind.

1. Your attitude

Pay attention to how you get along and interact with others. Be conscious of your non-verbal communication, your facial expressions, and your body language — studies have proven that it has four times more influence on first impressions than your words. And don’t underestimate the power of a sincere smile!

2. The proxemics

Proxemics is the study of how we use space when we’re communicating. Understanding more about proxemics can greatly increase your chances of success and acceptance.

This is very important in job interviews. The place where you are located gives a message about how you perceive your role and the role of an interviewer in that situation. When the interviewer offers you a seat, sit upright and comfortably, but don’t lean too far forward or too far back. If your interviewer doesn’t indicate a particular chair, take a seat directly across from him or her. Try not to cross your arms and legs, as this can make you appear defensive.

3. Your clothing

Your clothes should match your behavior and the words you use. If you want to make a good first impression, make sure your clothing is clean, fits you well, and is appropriate for the situation.

4. Your accessories

Less is more. Keep your jewelry simple: accessories should add to your outfit, not distract. Your shoes also play a very important role, so make sure they are in perfect condition.

5. Your hair

Your hair can contribute to your image or completely ruin it. Tangled, greasy, sprayed, or overdone hair can give the wrong impression about you, so make sure your hair (and nails!) are clean and neat.

6. Your makeup

Makeup can make you feel more powerful and confident, but you should choose it according to the occasion to make sure that you’re giving the right impression.

Wearing heavy makeup to a job interview is a big no-no. Choose light and natural-looking makeup that enhances your natural beauty and features.

Remember that the way you present yourself is very closely tied to the way the world perceives you. If you learn to manage the different elements that build your image, you will have more opportunities to make a good impression.
